Adware Spyware Removal Guide - August 2011

Just briefly I thought I would share my current Virus Scanner and Spyware removal tools that I am using 2011.

All of these are free and working well.

Virus Scanner and Firewall:
- Comodo Anti-Virus ( Free Version )
- Comodo Firewall ( Free Version )
- Comodo Internet Securiy is also available freely although I am yet to put it to use.

For Spyware I am still using:
- Spybot ( which still seems to find and clean any spyware well )
- Malwarebyte's is also another great program for finding and eliminating spyware.

Browsers
- Still using Firefox - Firebug for web developers rocks.
- Using Google Chrome from time to time as well. (Speed is excellent)

If anyone else has any recommendations please be sure to let me know.

The debate about the best virus scanner

Yesterday I kicked off a discussion within the it company I work in about virus scanners and which one is best. 3 people including a php programmer, sales rep / desktop support specialist and myself a webmaster were quickly arguing with all 3 of us looking after our machines and networks with completely different solutions. The results were the php developer using kaspersky, the sales / desktop support specialist swearing by avast and myself using commodo.
I will investigate all three programs suggested give some comparisons between each product. I will also be re- enabling comments on the blog shortly and would love to no your thoughts and virus scanners you are using.

AVG is slowing down my computer..

I finally did a reformat on my computer and decided to try a few new products.
Firstly i have ditched Kerio Personal Firewall and AVG antivirus for a free all in one solution from comodo.
Avg was so slow in loading and running updates / scan seemed to take up to much time.
I have been using comodo firewall on a laptop for a while but found the intial setup and creating rules for new processes painful. Once you get through the initial setup and training, the program works flawlessly silent protecting you computer from nasty spyware, adware, malware and viruses. By default it runs automatic updates by itself and doesn't seem to affect my computer performance at all.
Comodo has recently released an award winning anti-virus program with the firewall. You can download it from comodo.com and the best part, it's free.

The four programs i am actively using for full computer protection are:

  1. Firewall: Comodo

  2. Virus Scanner : Comodo

  3. Spyware: Spybot

  4. and browser is minefield (mozilla's - trunk build)

The fastest browser known to man

Mozilla has just released a trunk build called minefield which will become the next version of firefox. The blistering speeds and low processor consumption make this build really stand out from the crowd. If you thought mozillas latest version was good wait till you try this. Mozilla is currently recruiting testers and
your invited. For more information and details on how to get involved visit www.Mozilla.org/projects/minefield/

Adware Spyware Removal Guide - Updated August 2008

Wow! I cannot believe this blog is still alive.
I made one post on this blog back in 2005 and found it whilst trying to create a new blogger account. Unbelievable. This was my very first ever blog.

Amazingly all the information in my previous post is still valid even after 3 years and the only things that appear different is that ewido (the awesome program that is was) has now beeen taken over by AVG and kerio personal firewall has been taken over by sunbelt.

Firefox and Avira Antivir are still two programs i would highly recommmend today.

Everything i will be recommending in this post are free programs to both download and use. They are not trial versions, however some of those recommended are basic editions of the program.

I run 3 computers at home and haven't had barely any problems over the last year or two with adware, spyware, malware or viruses for that matter. My secrets for a clean and well protected computer these days are:

For anti virus i now use AVG Free Anti-virus (BASIC FREE EDITION).
You can download it here: http://free.avg.com/
Like any antivirus software it does have it's pros and cons.

Pros
- Updates and runs itself automatically DAILY
- Integrates itself automatically with outlook for email scanning (providing a message in each email stating that "this email has been scanned with AVG antivirus)
- It picks up viruses easily(early detection) and quarantines.
-It has a following of 70 million users worldwide.
-It's trustworthy and comes in handy when it counts.

Cons
- It runs on startup by default and can really slow your computer down.

For an internet browser i am still using Mozilla's Firefox and i still personally think that it craps all over internet explorer 7.

For spyware, malware and adware i now use spybot and have been doing so for a while. Ewido was the best in it's day but spybot i feel has now taken charge. It picks up anything nasty lurking on your computer and i would recommend a full update and scan with spybot every 2 weeks. Read more and download spybot here: http://www.safer-networking.org

Firewall - One of the three computers in my home network still uses Kerio Personal Firewall and it still works as well today as the day i downloaded it.
My other two computers now use a program called comodo. I have had comodo personal firewal for over a year now and in terms of protection it is definently one of the best programs out. Once again, this product is 100% free.
You can read more about it and download here: www.personalfirewall.comodo.com

Now i am no expert in this field nor am i claiming to be. I am just simply advising you on what has been great for both me, friends, and family.

I am going to attempt to post a little more regularly on this blog so please come back and have a read.

Just one more thing. If you see a little yellow exclamation mark in your taskbar (near the time) please click on it and do your windows updates. If i have one more person ask me do i have to download those update things i am going to scream!!! Of course you do.

Adware Spyware Removal Guide

This adware and spyware removal guide aims to help people to understand a little about spyware, adware, malware and rid these malicious acts. For years we have been inundated with adds popping up, malicious programs taking over our computers forcing some of us off the net and into the local computer repairer. I believe i have found a method to rid this garbage for good.

# Is your computer running very slowly
# Do you have pop-ups constantly annoying you
# Do weird things seem to be happening when your on the internet

If you answered yes to any of the above then you have come to the right place. Through my three years of researching, fixing and creating my system to deal with these issues i have learn't one thing. The longer you leave these type of problems, the worse they get. Firstly, there are a few things you should know before you start. Here are some web definitions you should familiarise yourself with.

# Spyware - is software that covertly gathers user information through the user's Internet connection without his or her knowledge, usually for advertising purposes.
# Adware - is typically a separate program that is installed at the same time as a shareware or similar program, adware will usually continue to generate advertising even when the user is not running the originally desired program.
# Malware - Hardware, software, or firmware that is intentionally included or inserted in a system for a harmful purpose. (See: logic bomb, Trojan horse, virus, worm.)

Understanding some of these terms will help in combatting them.

Now that we know some of the definitions we can begin to combat the problems.

Firsty lets look at your Internet browser. A large percentage of people seem to be using the windows internet explorer. Not only is windows explorer very unstable, but its the reason for all those popups and rubbish coming through. My strongest advice would be to get rid of this browser immediately and upgrade to the new world of browsers, Mozillas firefox. Stable browser that keeps out those pesky popups and is the new world in browsing.

(Mozilla Firefox) Click on the FIREFOX icon at the top of this page ^^^

The next thing to look at is a firewall. Are you running a firewall?
If you are already running a firewall identify what it is. If it's windows firewall i strongly advise you to get something else as well. Personally, of all the firewall programs i have used I found Kerio Personal Firewall to be the best and i strongly advise that you get it. You can run both at the same time as i am doing right now. If you don't have a firewall then you can download a free trial of kerio personal firewall. It lasts about 3 months before having to pay to continue to use the full version. You can download it from this address:

(Kerio Personal Firewall) http://www.kerio.com/kpf_home.html

Now that we have estabalised the problem stopping these pests getting through with mozilla's firefox and kerio's personal firewall, we can attempt to get rid of anything lurking on your computer. Firstly lets get a virus scanner. Antiviri Xp is fantastic. It is completely free for private/home use, is updated regularly and doesn't to my knowledge conflict with other programs. It is available for download at the address below.

(Anitivir XP) http://www.free-av.com/

This will get rid of some of those unwanted viruses and keep your computer virus free. Run this virus scanner at least once per week for best results. One thing you must also do every couple of weeks is update your software. Especially virus scanners. New viruses emerge everyday and to stay on top of them you need to keep you virus definitions updated.
Nearly there just one more thing to do.

(Ewido) http://www.ewido.net/en/

Of all the spyware/adware removal software i have ever used this is the best. It will remove everything, i mean everything, be catious when using this and don't select delete all problems as it will delete all your cookies, other program update features etc etc. Be very careful using this program. Read all directions and follow carefully. If you are not sure of something either do a google search and find out what it is or ask! (note: If you have the nail.exe virus ewido will remove it!!)

These four programs, kerio personal firewall, mozilla firefox, antiviri XP, and ewido should rid your computer of these malicious programs and minimise any further intrusions. They also run perfectly together i.e. without crashing.

I take no resposibility for damage or loss of data. This is simply a guide, follow ups and research should be undertaken before deleting, scanning, or downloading software.
DO NOT FORGET TO UPDATE YOU SOFTWARE!! *goodluck*
